Tak Talk Blog- Camp Takajo – July 29, 2023

By July 29, 2023 Tak Talk

It was a bright, sunny start to the day, and our boys enjoyed a full morning of regulars. But as predicted, the wind shifted, and the skies opened after lunch.

We took an extended rest hour and allowed our nurses the time they needed to do head-to-toe checks for every camper in camp. I am so proud of our medical staff and their dedication to all our boys. While they have the medical skills required to care for our community, what is equally essential is they have the warmth, patience, and empathy to care for our family. Every week, each child spends time privately with a nurse, and we do a head-to-toe check and an emotional wellness check-in. My nurses often alert me to something brewing that allows us to connect with the child and meet his needs.

The afternoon was filled with indoor activities in our sports complexes, and our hobbies were in great demand. Our little guys just finished a coloring contest, and winners in each category received cool Takajo baseball caps as their prizes.

We heard from our Sub Seniors who set alarms this morning for 4:00 AM to catch the sunrise at Cadillac Mountain. Reports indicated that the early wakeup was worth it, as our boys were thrilled to be among the first in the country to see the sunrise. After a hearty breakfast, our boys spent the day sea kayaking in Bar Harbor. It was a hot, humid day, and our guys enjoyed splashing wars on the water. Later in the evening, our boys grabbed some dinner, enjoyed mini golf, and retired for the night.

Our Okees had a full day in Montreal, starting early touring Montréal’s zoo, the Biodome. Later in the morning, they grabbed lunch in Old Montreal and had time to purchase some swag before heading to Six Flags’ La Ronde Amusement Park. While the park features over forty rides, including nine roller coasters, the boys raved about The Titan, which climbs 145 feet above the park and flies as a giant pendulum ride. Later in the evening, the Okees enjoyed spending time at Oasis Surf, an indoor surfing complex and restaurant near Montreal. This non-stop trip of a lifetime is the perfect excursion to cap off an incredible Takajo career.

Back at home, our boys enjoyed a restful evening watching movies. The rain permitted our boys to take a well-deserved rest. As we reach the end of week five, our Warriors and Juniors eagerly anticipate their own big trips that will take place at the beginning of next week and rumors of an Olympic break that cannot be far behind.
