Tak Talk Blog- Camp Takajo – July 27, 2023

By July 27, 2023 Tak Talk

The first leg of our Sub-Senior trips is coming to an end. In anticipation of some inclement weather up north, we reached out to our Saint Croix River group by satellite phone – there are some virtues to technology – and told them to paddle faster and go passed the final checkpoint all the way to the takeout spot at Kelly Landing. We had our bus there, waiting to take them to Bangor for a shower and a shave, and a good dinner after living in the woods all week.

Our golfers played a round at Kebo Valley Golf Club, and tomorrow they’ll finish a run of spectacular Maine courses at Belgrade Lakes Golf Club. Not only have they had a blast, but they’ve mastered the art of repairing divots and four-putting. Tonight, they’ll take in a Portland Sea Dogs minor league baseball game and, after their round tomorrow, will meet up with the Saint Croix group in Bar Harbor for the second leg of their trip. Tough life!

After a buffet breakfast at their hotel, our Okees enjoyed Canada’s largest water park, Village Vacances Valcartier. After a BBQ lunch, they traveled to Les Galeries de la Capitale, and had unlimited access to the Mega Parc amusement park rides and indoor ice-skating rink, followed by a movie.

Meanwhile, the Inters finished up their trip to Boston at Canobie Lake State Park, an amusement park in New Hampshire before heading back to Maine and stopping for dinner and a movie at Smitty’s. They returned to camp tired but exhilarated from their trip.

Our 10U soccer team, made up of boys in our Eagle age group, hosted a round-robin soccer tournament with four nearby camps. The skill level among this young age group is truly amazing. A rain shower in the middle of play did nothing to dampen the enthusiasm. The final game went to penalty kicks and, on the final kick of the tournament, Takajo scored to win the event.

Junior Camp was busy today, also. Our Junior Greens hosted an 11U round-robin basketball tournament with five area camps. The rain forced us inside, so we took advantage of our indoor basketball court in the Simpson Center, which was packed with younger campers cheering our boys to victory. After working up a good sweat, our Junior Greens hit the showers in preparation for a social at our place with the ladies from Tripp Lake. DJ Shad had everyone up on their feet and the day ended with everyone in high spirits.

We’re cruising through the week, but there’s so much more to come. With our Seniors out on trips this week, our Warrior and Junior campers are enjoying the run of the camp and clearly making the most of it!
