Camp Takajo in Naples, Maine, USA

We continue to enjoy warm summer days with bright sunshine, much more in keeping with what we hope for during the summer.

We had another action-packed day for boys of all age levels. Our boys on the St. Croix River Trip had a fabulous day, paddling in the open water and taking in the incredible scenery before reaching their campsite, where they pulled their canoes onto the bank of the river, pitched their tents, and prepared to cook a delicious meal over a roaring fire. Our trip leaders have a satellite hotspot and tracking device so we can keep tabs on our group and live vicariously through their experience.

Our golfers had a leisurely start to their day and made their way to Camp Ellis Beach, outside of Portland, before heading to Cape Arundel Golf Club for their 1:30 PM tee time. Our counselors report that the campers’ golf etiquette was up to par. However, there may be a need to pull into Dick’s Sporting Goods to reload on golf balls.

Our ten-and-under lacrosse team had the thrill of the summer when our little guys had their first opportunity to participate in a round-robin lacrosse tournament. The boys played hard in their first game and were victorious, allowing them to advance to the finals. After jumping out to a five-to-one lead in the second game, our boys saw their cushion disappear when the score was locked at five-all. Our boys regained their composure and finished the game on top with a score of ten to five. Our coaches reported that immediately when the game ended, our boys took their helmets off and extended their hands to their opponents displaying great sportsmanship.

Our Intermediates had a blast today in Boston, starting their day touring the aquarium before making their way to Faneuil Hall for lunch. After a sightseeing tour in Boston, our boys went to Fenway Park, where they enjoyed watching the Red Sox play the Atlanta Braves.

Our Okees spent the day finishing packing for their trip to Canada and are counting down the minutes until they depart tomorrow morning. Our oldest boys spent the afternoon playing beach volleyball and enjoying this time together in camp.

The moment that sticks out the most during the day was when I went to watch our Hawks play tennis. A first-year camper approached me and said he had been working hard all summer to learn the camp alma mater. Without hesitation, he began to sing with his beautiful, soft voice. I could not help but join him, which caught the attention of the other boys doing a drill with our tennis staff on the first court. Suddenly I noticed play had stopped, and the other campers joined in. When we finished singing, the boys cheered and continued their tennis lessons.

Although it was just a moment, the innocence and spontaneity speak to the beauty of what takes place in camp. Tonight, was movie night for the Hawks at my house, so I spent more time with this incredible group of boys. It was another fantastic day at Camp Takajo.
