Day One at Camp Takajo is in the record books, and it could not have been a more spectacular day. We woke up to sunny skies with a cool breeze coming off Long Lake and temperatures in the mid seventies. Throughout the day, the campers arrived on time, full of energy, enthusiasm, and pure joy. The afternoon was spent reconnecting with old friends and counselors, and for those who have joined us for the first time, touring our facility and establishing new friendships.
Our first official camp meal was chicken fingers and french fries (comfort food) with an awesome pasta bar for those looking for an alternative. Just before bedtime, I made my evening rounds, and visited all of our campers who live in Warrior Camp (campers finishing grades 1-4). I make a habit of saying goodnight to the boys every night, so I can have the peace of mind knowing each child feels safe and secure before going to sleep.
It was amazing to see the interaction taking place in the bunks this evening. Our counselors were engaging the boys, helping create connections, and most importantly, establishing a sense of warmth and comfort in each cabin. As taps echoed over a star-lit sky, I smiled knowing that the best is yet to come.
