Camp Takajo 2015 Arrival Day

Many of you will have the opportunity to read this blog before you send your child with our escorts off to camp. One of the most common questions that a child will ask a parent is, “What happens to me when I arrive?”As each bus pulls down the Takajo road, campers are greeted by me and the entire Takajo family. Your boys will be welcomed by thunderous applause and cheering the second they step off the bus.

Camp Takajo 2015 Arrival Day

Campers are immediately introduced to their bunk counselors who grab their bags and escort the boys directly to their bunk. During the course of the orientation week, our staff has carefully unpacked each camper. We placed his clothes in personalized areas, jacket/robe/laundry-bag in his personal alcove, and his toiletries and incidentals in a shelf behind his bed. Each camper’s bed is already made, and none of this is done to pamper the boys.

We feel that a child is far more likely to adjust to camp when he walks into a bunk and identifies with his personal belongings. Once your son is acclimated to his bunk, his counselor will take him on a tour of the facility, shoot baskets with him, or throw a ball around with him, until the next bus arrives. At that point, your son will join the rest of the staff in greeting the next group of campers. We do this throughout the day, until all campers have arrived.

Tomorrow marks the start of Takajo’s 69th season. I can still remember getting off the bus and being greeted by Takajo’s founder, Morty Goldman, my first summer in 1970. His infectious smile and warm handshake made me feel safe, welcomed, and at home. As I embark on my 46th consecutive summer at Camp Takajo, I will make every effort to continue Morty’s legacy.
