What’s Happening at Camp Takajo? July 9, 2012

By July 9, 2012 January 14th, 2019 Tak Talk

Jeff’s Thoughts:
Love:  A perspective family came to visit Camp Takajo yesterday.  The mother asked a very logical question. What makes Camp Takajo unique? What separates us from all of the other camps in Maine? I could answer that question by talking about the return rate of our key staff. I could respond by pointing out our 17 tennis courts, two indoor basketball facilities, our beautiful dining room, or our magnificent waterfront, but ultimately what really makes Takajo so unique is the incredible staff we hire each and every summer to work with our children.  We are the only camp that hires a female counselor to assist in every bunk for our boys finishing 1st through 4th grade. How reassuring it must be for a parent to know that we not only have two male counselors to each bunk of around eight children, but also a nurturing female counselor to monitor the boys and stop in daily as their bunk mother.   Whether it is an issue of hygiene or a little extra TLC, our fantastic female counselors set us apart from all of the rest.  Love.

  • Last night, we enjoyed an exciting league championship during which the Buckeye’s beat the Wolverine’s in lacrosse, and the Generals defeated the Minutemen in an exciting game of basketball.  Today, we have a very busy day in Junior camp, as all groups have lacrosse, basketball, baseball, our first Junior golf inter-camp, the Takajo climbing competition and tennis taking place.  And, to top it all off, our Junior Green campers have a dinner dance with Camp Vega tonight.
  • The Warrior Crows today have their first little trip out of camp.  The entire age group will be going to the beach, out to lunch and then to see a fun movie at the theater.  Every Crow is excited to spend their day on an exciting trip together.
  • All of our Warrior campers today were urged to sign up for a night out on the golf course. They will leave right after dinner and return before sundown.
  • In tennis today, we have a B tournament for the 11-, 13-, and 15-years-olds.  The 13- and 15-year-old boys will be going to Camp Cedar, and the 11-year-olds are heading to Camp Skylemar.

  • The 11-, 13-, and 15-year-olds are a part of the Takajo Climbing Competition today and will spend much of their time up on the rock wall.  You can hear the roaring of the crowd on the pioneering side of camp.  The scores will be announced tomorrow, but the intensity and athleticism were high at the wall.
  • The weather this week has been unbelievable, so amazing for the waterfront. Long Lake looked glorious this morning, with a gentle breeze; the water was flat and calm as sailors learned to work in harmony with nature.  Meanwhile, the Junior Greens learned the different components of breast stroke and the front crawl during their instructional swimming activity period.
