What’s Happening at Camp Takajo? July 7, 2012- “Is It Wednesday?”

Jeff’s Thoughts:  “Is It Wednesday?”
Self Reliance: Departing for camp is an emotional experience for campers and their parents. For one little boy this summer, getting on the bus on departure day was more than he could endure. His parents recognized the value in the camp experience and drove their hesitant son to Camp Takajo the following day. Arriving in the evening on a misty day was less than ideal, but our staff was ready to greet this child and welcome him with open arms. As parents, we all want to nurture our children and shield them from any discomfort, but Mom and Dad knew that their son needed to go outside of his “comfort zone” in order to develop inner strength and self-confidence. As the parents drove away, in tears, all they could see was a sobbing child who yelled to them, “Please come pick me up on Wednesday.”  Within one day of experiencing our structured program, this little guy was smiling, happy and fully ensconced in our program. A few Wednesdays have come and gone since that misty day, and never again has our camper asked to go home.  Self Reliance!

  • Today is Climbing Day up at the climbing wall near the Wannigan, our pioneering headquarters.  New WR Brave campers got a chance to climb, most for the first time ever in their lives.  We also held a climbing team practice, allowing climbing team members a chance to try a variety of new routes up the wall.  Senior campers also participated in activities in preparation for their Big Trips.
  • Warrior campers have Saturday Night at the Movies tonight! Campers will see a surprise movie under the stars.  Also, Warrior campers had the opportunity to hone their basketball skills with coach Brian Eagleson, during his basketball specialty clinic today.
  • Junior campers are enjoying a full day of regular activities today after trips and inter-camp tournaments yesterday.  Saturday Night at the Movies for Juniors will be tonight, and the final day of League sports happened today with the championships being held tomorrow.

  • Senior camp enjoyed thrilling finals in the Intermediate and SubSenior sports league today. Campers on the winning teams quickly changed clothes and were driven into town for a pizza party celebration.  New league teams will be announced tomorrow morning.
  • The Takajo waterfront was busy with activity in all areas today, as campers and staff soaked up the beautiful sunny day with swimming, water skiing, wake boarding, banana boat rides, fishing, sailing, and canoeing.
