What’s Happening at Camp Takajo? July 17, 2012

Jeff’s Thoughts:
Faith:  In the book, Season of Life, written by my good friend Jeffrey Marx, Joe Ehrmann, head football coach at Gilman High School in Baltimore, was asked by a player’s parent how successful the team would be that season. He responded, “I have no idea. Won’t know for twenty years. I’ll be able to see what kind of fathers they are. I’ll see what they’re doing in the community.”

Coach Ehrman believed that success was not measured by the wins and losses columns, or by a big play, but rather by the values his players learned while being a member of the team.

At Camp Takajo we are all members of a fraternity, and our overriding purpose is to teach our campers life skills, such as self-reliance, honesty and integrity.  How is our summer going? I’ll answer that in twenty years. Faith

  • The Warrior Crow campers went on an exciting field trip yesterday to sail on a pirate ship and swim in Lake Sebago.  Tonight, some of the Warriors will make their way to the tree houses, where they will enjoy a campfire and eat  s’mores.
  • The Warrior Indian campers are at Camp Skylemar today, defending the lacrosse title they earned last summer.
  • There are two basketball tournaments today for Senior campers, one at Camp Takajo and another at a neighboring camp.  All the campers are preparing costumes for tomorrow’s carnival, and we can’t wait to see how creative these guys are.
  • Today, the waterfront staff had their hands full.  With a little morning rain, it was a bit more challenging to organize the usual activities, but by lunch, the sun was shining, the wind was blowing, and campers could be seen canoeing and splashing around in the water.  The waterfront crew has also been getting ready for tomorrow’s carnival.
  • The 12-year-olds and 14-year-olds both have socials this evening, when Tripp Lake Camp will be visiting Camp Takajo.  The boys are excited to see their friends and spend a few hours catching up.
  • Today, some of our Warriors are at Camp Winaukee, where they are playing in a tennis tournament. For many of these boys, this is their first time traveling to play in an inter-camp event. Good luck!
  • Camp Takajo has been buzzing all day about the annual carnival, taking place here tomorrow. They can’t wait to see their friends and family members from nearby camps, and to share their costumes with the rest of us.  The boys will enjoy some carnival food, games, and a fantastic day just for fun.
