Campers participate in a tug-o-war at Camp Takajo in Naples, Maine

There are a few traditions that happen at Takajo on the Fourth of July— none of them have anything to do with fireworks.

We take the morning for individual and bunk photos— a perfect opportunity since we’re not traveling on congested roads during the holiday. Independence Day also symbolizes our iconic Family Field Day competition. Our camp “families” came together for an afternoon of competition, and there was something for everyone. After lunch, camp families dressed in team colors. Throughout the day, the boys competed in three-on-three soccer matches, basketball games, tennis matches, and flag football. There was also a homerun derby competition, kickboard races, and even a trivia bowl, “Top Trumps” card game event, and spelling bee!

As the competition neared the end, we all came together on the infield of our Senior Baseball Field to watch our Sub Seniors and Okees compete in a tug of war competition. The cheers and screams could be heard around the campus as our oldest boys grabbed hold of the rope and pulled with all their might, trying to secure victory for their families.

This was the perfect break from our regular scheduled program, as our boys loved staying home and enjoying the friendly competition across age groups.

Energy was high during dinner, as campers and counselors recounted the most memorable moments of the day. The raffle bag appeared after the meal, and Takajo swag was on the line to the delight of all campers. While we will still look forward to our fireworks display on the fifth, today certainly exemplified the spirit of Camp Takajo.
