It was a warm summer day, and spirits were high around Camp Takajo. After my morning meeting with the nurses, I moved from activity to activity, trying to capture your boys’ day in real time. I’m seeing outstanding instruction across all age groups and am already noticing that skill development showing up in gameplay.
On the basketball courts, counselors are tailoring drills to each age level: focusing on fundamentals for beginners and pushing older boys with more advanced techniques. Our 15-and-under team is hard at work preparing for a big tournament on July 14th.
We have 17 tennis counselors, one for every court, most of whom are college players. The boys love hitting with them. During match play, these coaches stay up at the net, guiding our boys on strategy and court etiquette.
I also stopped by Warrior Crow soccer today. Three counselors ran the field with remarkable patience, using creative drills to keep our young boys with the shortest attention spans engaged and active.
In our Hobby buildings, shelves are already lined with early projects. I’m sure many of you will be receiving heartfelt gifts crafted with love during these first weeks of camp. Music blasted from the Radio & Electronics building, where our budding DJs entertained everyone passing by.
Later in the day, our Okees and Sub-Seniors were surprised when their group leader told them to be showered and ready to board buses by 4:30. We had purchased 75 tickets to the Portland Heart of Pines vs. AV Alta FC soccer match, part of the inaugural USL League One season for both teams. In a newly renovated stadium, our boys witnessed the incredible skills of these professional athletes. It was inspiring and entertaining, only to be outdone by the food trucks that filled their bellies throughout the match.
It was a great day at Camp Takajo.
