Tak Talk Blog- Camp Takajo – August 2, 2024

It was an action-packed day from the moment the boys opened their eyes, as Olympics were in full swing and our boys were eager to give a hundred percent. Before the competition could begin, the head lice company returned for final checks to make sure we send your boys home critter-free. It’s a good thing we checked, three boys in the entire camp had mild cases, so we shaved their heads to eliminate any chance of head lice. Admittedly, I get a little giddy sometimes at the end of a long day. We didn’t actually shave heads, but we did thorough shampoo treatments for all three boys and their bunkmates.

We had some incredibly close games throughout the day. There was a Senior soccer game that was seconds away from ending in a tie, which would have forced the game into penalty kicks. But a last-second call in the penalty box put one team’s sniper at the line. The boys watched in anticipation as this camper kicked a rocket into the upper-right-hand corner to secure the win for his team. One team cheered with jubilation while the other team’s heads sank in disbelief. Yet, they all met at midfield for handshakes and hugs, which symbolizes good sportsmanship and time to put the game behind them and move on.

Our Juniors had a Green and Grey track meet. In the afternoon, at the peak of the heat of the day, there were sixty-yard dashes, one and two-lap individual races, as well as relays and a cross-country run. In one particular race, in the final lap of a relay, one camper received the baton, his opponent already with a forty-yard lead. With determination on his face, the runner made an all-out sprint to catch his opponent. As the two runners turned the final corner, heading towards the finish line, the race was neck and neck. However, the sprint to catch up took all that was left of this gallant effort, and the runner simply couldn’t overcome the fatigue to capture the win. While the winning team raised their hands in victory, the losing team raised their runner with pride— celebrating his heroic effort.

There was a Warrior baseball game that came down to the final out in the bottom of the seventh inning, score tied, bases loaded, three and two was the count. It was a duel between pitcher and batter. The pitcher was throwing heat, the batter was fouling off his opponent’s best stuff. It was a riveting moment when the batter finally ripped a single over the shortstop’s head into left field, driving in the winning run.

Our Crows (finished first or second grades) will start their Olympic competition tomorrow because today they got to enjoy a fun-filled day at Story Land, a theme park geared for younger children. Our boys enjoyed taking in all the rides, cooled off at the waterpark, and enjoyed delicious soft-serve ice cream and dinner at McDonald’s to cap off an awesome day.

Our Juniors ended their day with an ice cream sundae party, while the Seniors retired to their indoor rec hall to watch the Paris Olympics. This final week is the culmination that encompasses the competition, sportsmanship, and friendships that have been ignited throughout the summer. There’ll be no letting up until we’re forced to on the eighth.
