I’ve always joked that I wanted to be a weatherman. There are not many professions that pay you when you’re right only half the time. But in this case, I couldn’t be happier with the forecast. As promised, the humidity has left the air; and, while the sun was still beating down on camp today, the air mass was not as oppressive. We had a glorious day. Tomorrow promises to be a carbon copy of today’s weather, and we’re excited to host you under clear skies.
I remember walking into Morty Goldman’s office the morning of a visiting day when I was the Junior Group Leader and Morty owned the camp. He had his feet up on the desk and was reading the New York Times. I asked Morty how he could be so relaxed knowing that in just a few hours he would be hosting close to a thousand visitors. Morty casually lowered the paper, looked up at me with his steel blue eyes, and said, “We’ve had four weeks to prepare. There’s nothing I can do at this moment other than take great pride in my staff and greet our loyal families.”
As I write this blog on the eve of our parents’ day, I sit back and reflect on that conversation I had with Morty. We have worked incredibly hard in the last four weeks to care for your children. We have tried to provide compassion and love when needed and help your children step outside their comfort zones and take educated risks. We’ve cheered their accomplishments and provided comfort and encouragement when things haven’t gone their way. We have loved your children and treated them with kindness and compassion. We are excited to share in this wonderful reunion and promise to envelop your son the moment you leave, should he have a moment of sadness.
Looking forward to welcoming you to camp.
