As reveille sounded, bunk doors flew open and boys darted towards the lake. Some boys were making their way down for their daily dip, while others made a beeline to the dining room to snatch their favorite Dunkin’ Donuts.

Sunday mornings are a favorite in camp because we take a break from the structure and enjoy a leisurely start to our day. We break from our normal routine and program, using the morning to provide our boys the opportunity to focus on the activities of their choice.

Many boys enjoy heading down to the waterfront where they take in an extra ski or go for a sail. We run clinics in many land sports where campers can work on their pitching or perfecting their serves. The hobbies are open, which allows our boys the opportunity to be creative and have an extended period of time to work on a project. Lazy Man’s Morning is the perfect opportunity for us to reset and prepare for the week ahead.

As the clock struck noon, two buses of Tripp Lake sisters and cousins arrived in camp. It was our first Family Day. Watching this reunion was heartwarming. Siblings embraced and locked eyes as they shared information with each other about bunkmates, counselors, and activities.

These camp get-togethers are magical. They allow siblings to connect without the outside distractions of school, sports, parents, and technology. There’s a connection and intimacy that is evident and easy to witness, a connection that might not likely take place throughout the year.

When the reunion came to an end, there were hugs and some tears. The bitter-sweet connection with family made it hard for some to say goodbye. But just like what we’ll witness on Visiting Day, we distract our boys with our program and engage them in games throughout the afternoon. In short order, we were back in our routine.
