Tak Talk Blog- Camp Takajo – July 17, 2023

Camp Takajo in Naples, Maine, USA.

It was “organized chaos” today. It is almost hard to comprehend how much we pack into a day. The buses lined up outside the dining hall as our boys entered breakfast dressed in Takajo uniforms, ready to take on the world.

As our boys boarded the bus for a day of competition, I could not help but notice that the lead in last night’s play, Hercules, was dressed and ready to compete. What a cool visual to think that our program could offer so much to our boys, where he could be in costume on Sunday evening and uniform on Monday morning.

Our twelve- and fifteen-and-under archers hit the mark today, reporting tons of bullseyes and a great team effort. Two teams of eleven-and-under soccer players competed in round-robin tournaments, and our ten-, twelve-, and fourteen-and-under tennis teams went to a neighboring camp to represent Takajo in their invitational.

Today, our climbers scaled to new heights as they competed on another camp’s climbing wall. Conquering a 50-foot rock wall while being timed encourages climbers to be strategic and agile, and our boys came out on top.

However, the event that surpasses all and will be etched in the minds of our Seniors forever was going on the road and playing in Maine’s most celebrated basketball tournament and experiencing the thrill of victory. When our boys returned home, they ran from the bus with jubilation and headed down to the waterfront for their celebratory dip in the lake. Splashing in the water, hugging one another, our boys seized the moment and celebrated in style.

Witnessing this was their Warrior basketball counselor, Shad, a sixteen-year veteran counselor who taught many of these boys how to dribble a basketball when they first arrived as little Warriors seven or eight years ago. It was a full-circle moment for these Seniors.
