Tak Talk Blog- Camp Takajo – July 16, 2023

Under gray, gloomy skies, and the threat of rain, our boys made their way down to the dining room at the sound of Reville in their PJ’s for their favorite Dunkin’ Donuts breakfast. Campers marveled at how quickly Sunday appeared on the calendar.

The week has flown by, filled with intercamp, big trips, hikes, golf excursions, and socials. We turned Wimbledon on as our boys lingered in the dining room watching some incredible tennis, feeling no urgency to start the day. Nevertheless, we had sisters and cousins at Camp Vega, Mataponi, Pinecliffe, and Fernwood excited to host us for brother-sister day. Our siblings and cousins boarded the buses and made their way for that long-awaited reunion. The goodbye was easy, knowing they would see each other again this Wednesday at Takajo’s iconic carnival.

The rain made its way to camp midday but did not impact our boys’ ability to keep busy. Our Warriors watched a movie, and our Juniors and Seniors went to our two sports complexes to burn off some energy.

This evening, the camp assembled at the MJG (Morton Jerome Goldman) Playhouse for our Senior Big Show, Hercules. Takajo’s founder, Morty Goldman, built this magnificent playhouse in 1952 before building any indoor sports complex. He considered the Playhouse the “hub of the camp” and felt it was critically important to the culture and community to have a building where we could assemble as one family. There have been memorable plays in this building throughout my 53 years, but Hercules will now rank among them. I marvel at how our boys can find time in their busy days to learn the lines, attend rehearsals, and perform with such poise and grace.

Coming together in the Playhouse and being entertained by our Senior thespians created the perfect ending to an exhilarating week. The evening ended as we sang the camp’s alma mater. I could not help but notice some of our youngest boys looking up on the stage in awe of our oldest boys leading us in song. Tattoo bellowed throughout the Playhouse as we stood silently, reflecting, thankful for another Takajo day.
