The Arch at Camp Takajo for Boys in Naples, Maine

After a few cool, overcast days, the skies over Camp Takajo in Maine are once again bright blue. The sun is beating down on Long Lake, and the temperatures have risen again to the mid-eighties. There is a rumor that we might find ourselves reaching a temperature in the low 90’s later this week. But, this is a far cry from the heat and humidity the rest of the country is feeling– just another reason why Maine’s slogan is “The Way Life Should Be.”

The Arch Ideals at Camp Takajo for Boys in Naples, MaineAs parents, we spend countless hours teaching our children and hoping our love and guidance will eventually pay dividends. Today, I had an amazing encounter with one of my 12-year-old campers. He came into my office, unsolicited, and told me that he came up with a unique and motivating way to train for his upcoming football season. The camper told me that one of his least favorite things to do is run. He commented that he gets bored easily, which interferes with his training. The camper said the way he combats his boredom is to start his daily running ritual under the Takajo arch. He selects one of the arch ideas and runs a lap around camp, down Hobby Lane, passed the waterfront, up the main road, and back to the arch. With each lap, he picks a different ideal and as he runs, he thinks about what that word means and how it impacts his life. This routine not only helps him train and combat boredom, but he credits Camp Takajo for inspiring him to be a more well-rounded person.

At camp, we work really hard at stressing the importance of living a life of integrity. It is incredibly gratifying knowing that this camper gets it.
