What a day! It started very early for some of our senior campers and staff members who have been training diligently to prepare for the annual “Swim the Lake” event. We had twenty-eight campers and staff members who woke up when the lake was calm to swim before reveille.

While it may be difficult to believe, some of the swimmers can actually swim the mile in under thirty minutes. Others, equally as determined, went at their personal pace and achieved success.

Without a doubt, the greatest event today was our annual Camp Takajo Carnival. The sun was shining, the sky was blue, and there was a beautiful breeze coming across Long Lake. In the morning, campers of all ages spent time on Hobby Lane, creating costumes they would wear for the annual costume parade. From our youngest Crow campers, who are experiencing this festival for the first time to our oldest senior campers, who were savoring this event one last time, I saw their beaming smiles throughout the day. What makes this event even more magical is having all of our campers’ sisters and cousins from neighboring girls camps here to join us for the afternoon.

As a parent, I understand that you would relish seeing your children in this incredibly beautiful setting and enjoying each other’s company. There were no distractions. No phones, no televisions, just uninterrupted pure family time. The hugs when the girls got off the bus were genuine and loving; only to be matched at the end of the day by a final hug that was emotional and sincere.

As I watched siblings and cousins come together for this continuous stretch of time, I could only imagine how much you miss your children and how incredibly excited you must feel knowing that visiting day is just a few days away. There is something magical about the camps in Maine and the families that send their children to a state that holds such majestic beauty. The lakes, towering pine trees, and cool summer breezes– what an extraordinary opportunity you have provided for your kids.
