Notes for Visiting Day at Camp Takajo- July 15, 2013

By July 15, 2013 January 4th, 2019 Tak Talk

During visiting day at Camp Takajo, it is our hope that we can anticipate your every need. There are a number of guests who are physically unable to navigate our facility without the use of a golf cart. For those individuals, and those individuals only, we will be providing golf cart shuttles throughout the day. Each driver of a golf cart will have a walkie-talkie so that we can radio for assistance and get our guests in need to their son’s or grandson’s next activity. The golf carts will only travel on the main roads of camp, which extend down to the waterfront, around Hobby Lane and across our playing fields. Golf carts are not permitted near the bunks because the terrain is too rough.  There are often times when parents try to commandeer a golf cart to shuttle up to the parking lot to get “illegal contraband” from the cars to the bunks. We are unable to assist you in this request. These golf carts need to be in circulation for our guests who need assistance getting around our facility.07_10_2013_SR_Okees and Jeff

Some consider it a right of passage and a tradition to bring candy and soda to visiting day, in excess. Please be advised that we will be removing anything that was not consumed during the course of the day from your child’s cabin as soon as you leave camp. I am respectfully asking you to bring nothing more than one shopping bag during your visit. For those that disregard this request, please know that there are three things that occur after you depart:

  • The health center in inundated with campers who become sick after consuming an unhealthy amount of junk food.
  • The campers often have emotional “meltdowns” when counselors take this excessive amount of food away from the bunks.
  • The facility becomes infested with skunks and other animals who sniff out even the most unusual hiding places.

I am reminded by a quote that I have shared with my own children on many occasions. “Children need our presence, more than our presents.”  Enjoy every minute of visiting day!
