The pace of summer never seems to slow down.
Yesterday, we hosted 15-and-under baseball here at camp. Today, some of our Seniors enjoyed a day on the golf course. Tomorrow, it will be our Warriors’ turn to tee it up, followed by our Juniors the day after.
One of the joys of a full-season camp experience is that every age group has opportunities to experience something a little different throughout the summer.
Today was another busy day on the intercamp front. Our 12-and-under soccer program today perfectly illustrates one of the things that makes Takajo special. Rather than fielding a single team, we strive for maximum participation. One soccer team boarded a bus to compete at a neighboring camp while another team played here at Takajo, allowing nearly every boy in the age group to suit up and represent the camp at the same time.
Intercamp competition begins with our Eagles, boys who finished fourth grade. Before then, our Warrior divisions are large enough to create balanced in-camp leagues where every boy competes every day alongside his bunkmates. Once our boys reach the age of ten, they begin representing Takajo against neighboring camps. Even then, we don’t have one standing basketball team, football team, or soccer team. Rosters rotate from game to game throughout the summer, giving as many boys as possible the opportunity to wear a Takajo uniform, compete alongside their friends, and experience the excitement of intercamp athletics.
Elsewhere, our 11-and-under tennis players traveled to a neighboring camp, while our 13-and-under and 15-and-under tennis teams were on the road at yet another camp. Our 15-and-under football team also headed out to compete, making for another action-packed day across several sports.
Not every adventure took place on an athletic field. Three of our Eagle bunks headed out on pioneering trips to explore some of the natural beauty of Maine and New Hampshire. One group hiked a scenic trail near Stow, Maine, where they searched for amethyst— better known as purple quartz. Another climbed the spur of the Willey Range, where a steep ascent through the forest gave way to breathtaking views overlooking Crawford Notch. A third group made its way to Arethusa Falls, following rushing streams past Fawn Pool and Coliseum Falls before reaching New Hampshire’s tallest single-drop waterfall.
Our Junior Greys—finished sixth grade—enjoyed an evening social at Camp Vega, while our youngest campers, the Crows, headed out on their Little Trip. They rented out a local movie theater to watch the latest Minions movie while enjoying chicken tenders and pizza. Every age group will have the opportunity to enjoy a Little Trip this week, with our Intermediates heading out tomorrow.
With so much happening both in and out of camp, the week continues to offer something for everyone. There is still plenty of excitement ahead, and we look forward to sharing it with you over the coming days.
