The second day of camp is always one of the busiest.

While our campers are beginning to settle into life at Takajo, there is still plenty to accomplish before our summer program is fully underway.

The morning began with every camper making a visit to our Health Center, where our outstanding nursing staff completed each boy’s first weekly health assessment. From head to toe, they ensured that our campers were healthy, comfortable, and ready for the weeks ahead. Throughout the morning, campers also had their individual photographs taken and stepped on the scale for weigh-ins.

Outside, it couldn’t have been a better Maine summer day. Blue skies, comfortable temperatures, and a light breeze made it easy to keep our boys moving from one activity to the next. Every field and court was full as our athletic counselors continued evaluating campers ahead of league competition, which begins tomorrow. Soccer balls rarely stopped rolling, tennis courts stayed busy, and batting practice continued throughout the afternoon as boys eagerly showcased their skills. The enthusiasm on the field was impossible to miss.

Swim tests also got underway down at the waterfront. For many of our boys, it’s one of the first milestones of the summer. While the evaluations are an important part of keeping our campers safe on the lake, they also mark the beginning of countless afternoons that will be spent swimming, boating, and enjoying one of the greatest parts of life at Takajo.

As I walked around camp this afternoon, I couldn’t help but notice how much had changed in just twenty-four hours. Yesterday, counselors were introducing boys to one another. Today, campers were walking to activities together, organizing pickup games between periods, and greeting each other like old friends. It’s amazing how quickly a group of strangers begins to feel like a community.

Tomorrow, the evaluations end and our league competitions begin.

For now, though, we’re exactly where we’d hoped to be after day two. Routines are taking shape, friendships are beginning to grow, and our camp family is settling into what promises to be another memorable summer.
