We had our first rain of the season, but it didn’t dampen our spirits. Fortunately, we have two indoor sports complexes, which were put to good use by all age groups throughout the day. Boys enjoyed playing dodgeball— especially when the counselors joined in. Of course, there was plenty of full-court basketball to burn off energy and break a good sweat.
Our hobby counselors never took a break as groups of boys made their way to Hobby Lane to explore their creative side. After the nurses’ inspection in the early afternoon for all boys, we made our way to the MJG Playhouse, named after Takajo’s founder, Morty Goldman, where we were entertained by our counselors. Our waterfront director acted as our emcee, proving once again that he is truly the king of the one-liners. There was magic tricks and lots of entertainment, but the highlights of our counselor talent show were the musical performances that brought everyone together in unison as we all joined in.
When the performances came to a close, we invited our fifteen-year-old boys— our Okees— on stage to lead us in the alma mater. First-year campers and staff listened with great intent to the words, as they hope to sing along at future camp-wide gatherings.
We retired for the evening as each group went to their respective rec halls for Saturday Night at the Movies, enjoying freshly popped popcorn. As we put our heads on the pillows, we dreamed of our first Lazy Man’s Morning and the sight and aroma of Dunkin’ Donuts.
