As I sit and reflect on the day, the word that comes to mind is logistics. It’s sometimes hard to comprehend how many things are happening in camp in one day. Every morning before the sound of reveille, I meet with the group leaders in my office so we can lay out the day. We discuss everything from the in-camp program and out-of-camp trips to the finer details of campers’ dynamic needs, bunk relations, and any other request or consideration that comes across my desk.
When I walk into the dining room for breakfast, I’m always greeted by our food service director and kitchen staff, who have prepared a delicious meal that accommodates any camper with special dietary needs. The food deliveries, the menu planning, and the precision with which our wait staff cleans and resets the dining room after each seating require great attention to detail.
After breakfast, I head to the Health Center to meet with our medical team and review treatment plans for any camper who requires medical attention. We discuss who stayed overnight, who may require an antibiotic, and communicate with any parent before a child receives any medical attention outside of camp.
Logistics. Everything we do requires great attention to detail and a team of hardworking, dedicated staff to execute. This week, our Seniors are in Canada, Bar Harbor, Boston, and Belgrade Lakes, Maine. All of these trips require well-thought-out itineraries, hotel reservations, and emergency action plans in case of inclement weather. For our campers to experience a memorable trip, behind the scenes we have a caring staff that spends countless hours preparing every detail so that the experience goes off as planned.
