Camp Takajo

You couldn’t pick a more perfect day to open camp. A light breeze off the lake quickly turned to bright sunshine, temperatures that reached the mid-eighties and enough humidity to remind us that school is over, and it’s time to have some fun. Watching those buses roll in never gets old; making eye contact with that little guy who takes that leap of faith as he steps off the bus is an instant reminder of why the camp experience is so important. Your sons will learn so much more than how to kick a soccer ball or throw a baseball properly, they will develop a sense of independence, self-reliance, and confidence to be able to explore many more wonderful opportunities in the coming years. I know this because behind those little boys stepping off the bus are bigger boys who feel like they own the place and can’t wait to reconnect with their summer brothers. Our older boys have grown up with their camp friends and developed a connection and bond that only comes from sharing the camp experience. Living and competing together creates some of the most authentic moments when we are forced to rely on those closest to us to help us when we’re vulnerable, pick us up when we’re down, and celebrate our accomplishments.

I would have to imagine that this morning felt like a whirlwind. Many of you had to rush out of your homes to connect with our groups and may not have had the opportunity to process this separation until later in the day. I can assure you that, while you have visited your son’s room, picked up his pajamas that he wore the night before, smelled his pillows seeking that scent of familiarity, your son has been running around this camp like he’s been here for weeks. Impromptu pick-up basketball games have been taking place on all our hard courts. Sounds of laughter have echoed from the gaga pit. Tennis courts and paddle tennis courts have been in use all afternoon. This evening after our Florida group arrived, each group head held a welcome meeting, where they introduced their staff, talked about our goals and hopes for the summer, and made sure each camper felt settled and connected to his bunkmates and counselors.

As the sun was setting, our little guys made their way to the Snack Shack in their pj’s and enjoyed sitting together as a bunk, eating bowls of cereal, and enjoying other snacks. Counselors remained in bunks throughout the night to make sure that everybody felt settled and to help those who may have needed a little extra comfort. It was a perfect start to the camp season.
