It’s difficult not to take a moment to reflect on this past weekend and the incredible day our boys experienced during our virtual visiting day. The day after parents depart is often very demanding, and the boys are often unmotivated. There is sometimes a natural sadness that takes place after the incredible high of reconnecting with one’s parents. Sunday mornings after visiting day are typically the time that we have to go into the bunks and sift through the enormous amount of candy and goodies that come in. While we always try to leave some snacks, there is added disappointment when we have had to take away the excess in order to create a hygienic bunk environment. None of that exists this year, nor have we been visited by any skunks who always find their way around our cabins after the “illegal” contraband makes its way into camp.

We started our Sunday morning like all other Sundays with a leisurely breakfast, munching on Dunkin’ Donuts and other goodies our cooks prepared. There was a mist in the air throughout the morning so our Warriors and Juniors took turns in our indoor sports complexes and hobbies.

Our Senior campers started packing in preparation for our well-planned, three-day, mobile bubble getaway. Today, our Intermediate campers (finished seventh grade) departed in our busses after lunch and made their way towards Sunday River Resort. We have rented the resort to allow our boys the opportunity to play and explore on this scenic mountaintop property. Before reaching Sunday River, our busses pulled into a bowling alley that we rented exclusively for our group, providing a few hours of fun entertainment outside of camp. When our boys reached Sunday River, they spent the afternoon exploring on this private mountaintop before enjoying a pizza dinner at the base of the mountain and then retiring to their rooms at the Snow Cap Inn. We’ve spent weeks preparing for this outing to ensure that we would have the exclusivity of this space, and it is a welcomed and well-deserved retreat for our boys.

Tomorrow morning, our boys will be treated to a hearty breakfast, will leave Sunday River, and will head to a movie theater that we have rented for exclusive use by our boys. They’ll enjoy watching a recently released movie in the privacy of their own theater as they munch on popcorn and other snacks. After the movies, our boys will head north to Adventure Bound Campground, where we have reserved a private campsite for our boys to explore and sleep. Our boys will stay in cabins with some of their bunkmates, and I have hired a security guard to make sure that our curious boys stay in their family pods after dark. On the third day of our excursion, our boys will wake up and go rafting down the Kennebec River. This ten-mile rafting trip features a delicious steak, chicken, or fish lunch on the bank of the river, five miles into the journey.

Our boys in Senior camp are excited about this opportunity, and we believe that this will be the perfect change of scenery before returning home for our end-of-the-year festivities. As we begin the fifth week of camp, there are special events in store for our boys of all ages and spirits remain high.
