Baseball at summer camp

It was another scorcher today at Camp Takajo. I haven’t perspired this much since I was taking my SATs in high school. From the look of it, the sweltering heat doesn’t seem to be impacting our boys’ desire to get out and play. Rumor has it, the heat will break by Friday, and we might even experience some unseasonably cold temperatures by the weekend.

For the most part, our program is in full swing. Our oldest campers, finishing grades seven, eight, and nine, started their league competition. Teams were created for each age division, and boys competed in baseball, basketball, soccer, tennis, flag football, and lacrosse. There was a team sports period from 9:30 to 11:00 AM and a second game that took place in the afternoon at 2:45 ending at 4:00 PM. This was a great opportunity for our older boys to get back on the fields and courts and compete.

Our Seniors had two elective periods today, one in the late morning, and the second in the afternoon. These elective periods allow our oldest boys the opportunity to specialize in the activities that mean the most to them. Our Junior boys, who finished fifth or sixth grade, finished team tryouts today and will start their league play tomorrow. Nevertheless, even while they eagerly anticipate hearing their names announced for their league teams tomorrow, they enjoyed playing out on the fields with their bunkmates. Our Warrior campers, who have finished first, second, third, or fourth grades, are in full swing. Each boy had the opportunity to play two team sports, participate in our skills activities, such as water skiing, sailing, canoeing, archery, tennis, or golf, as well as a hobby period. As I watched the boys move from activity to activity, I marveled at how quickly they adapted to our schedule.

It’s important to note, that while our focus is clearly on the happiness and adjustment of our boys, we couldn’t do this without the incredible dedication of our staff. Our counselors have met the challenge since opening day and have worked tirelessly with your boys to help them feel settled and loved. It is their day-to-day interaction that cultivates the warmth and nurturing environment that forms the basis of the Takajo Family.
