As a camp director, I am a big proponent of preaching to parents that they should trust the institution. Allow us to do what we do best, have the confidence that we have your child’s best interest at heart, and we will help guide him grow and develop over the summer. As a parent, I must admit there are times I struggle with my own advice. It is difficult for us to not become emotionally invested when it comes to our own children. Instinctively, we want to fix everything. However, rationally, we know that a quick fix does not always create a lasting solution.

Today, Camp Takajo was hosting a round robin tennis tournament with neighboring camps for some of the boys who have not had a chance to play competitively against other camps. Because my boys meet this criteria, this was their first opportunity to compete. As you might imagine, it’s far easier for me to cheer for your son than my own boys. It is somewhat complicated, because my own children probably want me on the sideline, but may also be a little embarrassed to have Dad in attendance.

While watching one of my boys play in a very close match, I noticed my son becoming a bit unraveled. Recognizing that it is important for children to learn how to handle stressful situations and rise above the fear of failure, my heart wanted to reach out to my son as he changed sides after a game to coach him. Fortunately, one brain cell happened to kick in and reminded me to trust my staff. Before I had a chance to react, one of our tennis coaches calmly approached my son and whispered some magic words that brought a smile to his face and removed the tension from his body.

This was an amazing teachable moment for my son, and for me. I was able to witness first-hand as a parent how important it is for our children to be mentored by others. I am thankful to my staff for making the most of these teachable moments for all of our children this summer because these experiences will help our children in greater challenges, yet to come.
