Camp Takajo Senior Big Show 2014

When Morty Goldman founded Camp Takajo back in 1947, he recognized the importance of having a program based on diversity.MJG Playhouse '57 at Camp Takajo As a matter of fact, before Morty built an indoor basketball facility, he built the Takajo Playhouse in 1951. John Dennerline, who was an art counselor in camp, designed the Takajo Playhouse. Working alongside an architect from Sweden, John Dennerlein designed the first building in the United States to be assembled with wooden trusses.MJG Playhouse inside at Camp Takajo
This building was featured in Fortune Magazine back in 1953. Morty always referred to the Playhouse as the “Hub of the Camp,” because it was the only building large enough to accommodate the entire camp. If you asked most former campers what their greatest memory of camp was, many would say it was participating in a Senior Big Show. I marvel at our campers’ ability to take time out of their very busy schedules to learn their lines and attend play practices.

Camp Takajo Senior Big Show 2014Tonight, Camp Takajo campers and counselors were entertained by our senior thespians as our boys performed Pippin, The Musical. There is nothing greater for a camper’s self-esteem than to stand in the center of our stage and perform. The level of talent on stage tonight was as good as anything I’ve ever seen in camp. For those younger campers watching this performance, I can only imagine that many can envision a day when they might take the Takajo stage. While there are many accomplishments that promote self-esteem in camp, there can be none greater than taking a curtain call on the Takajo stage after a magnificent performance.
