Camp Takajo in Naples, Maine

I’m sure the sound of reveille echoing across the campus had to startle some of our deep sleepers this morning. But, it’s a sound they will all grow accustomed to over the coming weeks.

On the second day of camp each year, there are a number of things we need to do before our program is in full swing. First on the list this morning was a head lice check, and I’m happy to report that all our kids are lice-free.

Our ten registered nurses took on the task of checking each boy from head-to-toe— doing a basic health assessment— to make sure that our boys were healthy, fit, and ready to engage in activities. Throughout the day, all fields and courts were in use. Our boys at every age level transitioned from sport to sport for quick assessments, providing the information our land sport coaches needed in order to create fair and balanced teams at every age level.

We launched our Hobby program today, and all of our hobbies were in full swing. I had the distinct honor of being interviewed by a group of budding reporters in our Eagle age group (finished fourth grade). They peppered me with questions about what it feels like to own and direct a summer camp. I eagerly await tomorrow’s Tak Talk, to see if I was properly quoted.

As the humidity levels rose throughout the day, our boys were thrilled to come down to the lake for swim evaluations. This year, campers were highly motivated to jump in the lake as they knew this assessment was required to enjoy our new Aqua Park throughout the season. While our boys had their first opportunities to get into a semblance of routine, there were whispers throughout the day about whether or not the NBA Finals Game 7 would be streamed on campus.

Needless to say, we didn’t disappoint. As tip-off time was upon us, our boys piled around the screens by age group. Game 7 was on, and boys cheered while munching on evening snacks.

We all stayed up a bit later this evening and might be a little tired tomorrow at the sound of reveille. But it wasn’t a school night…
