Tak Talk Blog- Camp Takajo – June 20, 2025

Camp Takajo welcomes a young camper.

I’m writing to you from my happy place, sitting at my desk, looking out over magnificent Long Lake. The sun is shining at Camp Takajo, and there’s not a cloud in the sky. Our sailboats are empty, bobbing in the water just waiting to be occupied by your boys.
Our staff has been here for the last few weeks, participating in our rigorous orientation. Our waterfront staff has successfully completed their lifeguard training course, which includes CPR and first aid. Our Pioneering Staff has completed their Ropes & Wilderness First Aid Training, and are now certified trip leaders in the state of Maine. Many of our land sports counselors teaching baseball, tennis, lacrosse, basketball, and football are athletes who are competing on the collegiate level.
However, most of our training has focused on being a role model and caring for your boys: knowing when to provide encouragement and the gentle push that one needs to get outside their comfort zone, or when to give a hug and reinforce the importance of trying and giving one’s best effort.
I know the excitement that you feel as your son is about to embark on this experience, but I also know the anxiety that creeps in before the start of a camp season. The greatest experiences that many of us have in our lives are often met with a sense of fear and trepidation. The moments when we allow ourselves to persevere and step outside our comfort zone often become some of our happiest experiences.
As you tuck your son into bed and snuggle with him one last night before he embarks on this journey, remind him of some of those moments where he was nervous: walking into school on opening day, auditioning for a play, trying out for a travel team…  These experiences have prepared him for this moment.
Here’s to a great 2025 season!
