Pioneering

Our Pioneering program includes backpacking, overnight camping, rock climbing, whitewater canoeing, and ropes course activities. Our counselors are certified as Maine Trip Leaders and are trained in CPR, first aid, and wilderness first response. We send over 100 trips out of camp each summer and take advantage of the beautiful natural surroundings in the nearby White Mountains National Forest.

During pioneering classes, campers learn basic outdoor skills. We have a 50-foot, four-sided climbing wall with challenging “problems” for climbers of all ages and abilities. We also have ropes course activities for teambuilding exercises.

Backpacking

Your son will learn about the basics of backpacking such as navigation, safety, first-aid, and the necessary equipment. This is a great way to learn more about outdoor survival, and our skilled staff will make sure it’s both an exciting and safe experience.

Camping

Camping at camp? Absolutely. Our natural surroundings are ideal for camping. Boys will learn to pick out and make a camp site, pitch a tent, build a fire, prepare food in the wild, and learn about potential hazards and how to control them.

Hiking

Hiking is one of the best activities at Camp Takajo. Our proximity to the mountains gives us access to some of the finest hiking in Maine. Campers will learn about how to hike safely, what equipment to bring, and enjoy the natural beauty of the outdoors.

Mountain & Rock Climbing

Campers learn orienteering on longer mountain hikes and climbs. Campers also have an opportunity to test their skills at nearby rock faces like Cathedral Ledge in the White Mountain National Forest.

Ropes Course

Ropes course and team-building go hand-in-hand. Your son will learn to safely negotiate a ropes course, interact with a team, and use all the equipment.

Whitewater Canoeing

The Saco River is calm enough to be safe but rapid enough to be exciting. Campers learn how to pilot a canoe through the river and how to maintain team coordination.
